Mental Health Month (05/01/2008 to 05/31/2008)
For more than 50 years, Mental Health Month has led the way as one of the nation's most recognized health observances. The National Mental Health Association (NMHA) has organized nationwide campaigns which have increased the public's awareness and understanding of mental health and illness.

Cinco de Mayo (05/05/2008)
Cinco de Mayo's history has its roots in the French Occupation of Mexico. The French occupation took shape in the aftermath of the Mexican-American War of 1846-48. Cinco de Mayo is a date of great importance for the Mexican and Chicano communities. It marks the victory of the Mexican Army over the French at the Battle of Puebla.

Mother's Day (05/11/2008)
In the United States, Julia Ward Howe suggested the idea of Mother's Day in 1872. Howe, who wrote the words to the Battle Hymn of the Republic, saw Mother's Day as being dedicated to peace. Anna Jarvis of Philadelphia is credited with bringing about the official observance of Mother's Day. Her campaign to establish such a holiday began as a remembrance of her mother, who died in 1905 and who had, in the late 19th century, tried to establish "Mother's Friendship Days" as a way to heal the scars of the Civil War.

American Red Cross Founding Day (05/21/2008)
Clara Barton and a circle of acquaintances founded the American Red Cross in Washington, D.C. on May 21, 1881. Barton first heard of the Swiss-inspired International Red Cross Movement while visiting Europe following the Civil War. Returning home, she campaigned for an American Red Cross society and for ratification of the Geneva Convention protecting the war-injured, which the United States ratified in 1882.

County and District Court Offices to be Closed Monday, May 26, 2008 (05/26/2008)
Douglas County and District Court offices will be closed on Monday, May 26, 2008 for the Memorial Day holiday. This includes offices in the Douglas County Courthouse, the Douglas County Judicial and Law Enforcement Center, and all external offices. Douglas County will reopen its doors on Tuesday, May 27, 2008.
